Stand-by and Standing Room Tix for Christmas Carol

In A RECKLESS CHRISTMAS CAROL, a different improviser - with no script and no rehearsals - takes on the role of Scrooge each night and steps into a fully staged production. While tickets are sold out for all three nights, we will have stand-by tickets and select standing room available on the night. You may sign up for these starting at 6:45 when the box office opens. Pre-sold tickets must be claimed by 7:15pm! At 7:25, we will begin releasing tickets to those on the list, in the order of sign-up. Select standing room may also be available. We will try to accommodate as many guests as possible, but cannot guarantee entry to anyone.

We look forward to seeing you for any of our three shows, featuring our amazing roster of Scrooges:

Friday, December 16th - Natasha Vaynblat
Saturday, December 17th - Frank Garcia-Hejl
Sunday, December 18th - Christian Capozzoli

NEW CLASSES

NEW ELECTIVE CLASSES - Open to anyone who has taken at least 3 levels at any improv school

An Improv education is a zigzagging march of successes and failures; but it doesn’t need to be a slog through chaos and the dark where we scrap individuality and our sense of humor to survive and come out the other end.

Instructors: Tom Kelley & Anne Veal
Mondays November 14th - December 19th, 7-10

Dive into an acting class focused on the skills most useful for improv: being present in the moment, emotional truthfulness, character development and psychology, vulnerability, and connecting with your partner onstage. Students will tackle monologues and scripted scenes, finally coming back to earnest, grounded, and emotionally vulnerable improvised scenes.

This class is begin-termediate: class will start with the fundamentals and quickly develop into an intermediate class keeping pace with the students' progression. No formalized acting training is required, but individualized feedback will ensure that even those with training will be spurred to growth.

Register now!

Instructor: Chris Roberti
Sundays December 4th - 18th, 11am-2pm

This class is focused on breaking out of our improv ruts, saying yes to ourselves, our scene, and our partners. This three week workshop is devised to create a culture of yes, balancing agreement with imagination, placing the same value on acceptance as we would creativity. Yes takes us further faster and gives our scenes thrust and lift and life.

Register now!

Improv to Sketch
Instructors: Christian Capozzoli & Andrew Coalson
Mondays November 28th - January 30th, 7-10
(No class December 26th or January 2nd)

The Reckless approach to sketch uses improv to create monstrously funny material that is then packaged into a dynamic/organic piece that is as refreshing and fun as it is theatrical. Create, heighten, refine, tweak, massage, braid, weave, sculpt your ideas into a slick piece of theatre.

The first half of the class will be dedicated to generating material with the holiday break used to memorize our roles, and the last few weeks will be dedicated to staging and refining our pieces.

Register now!

NEW CURRICULUM CLASSES - Open to students already within the training system. If you are interested in joining our curriculum, you can get to know us and let us get to know you through our monthly drop-in sessions, participating in Instant Teams, taking an Elective, or working with one of our certified coaches.

R2: Ensemble
Instructor: Christian Capozzoli
Saturdays November 12th - January 21st, 3-6
(No class November 26th, December 24th & 31st)

Celebrate team play, while boosting your confidence as a solo performer. Agreement and attack are essential to the Reckless method. Endorse and cosign each other's moves with immediate attack, be fearless and reactionary. Get on your toes, out of your head and play Reckless. Explore various forms such as the Monoscene, Harold, and Organic Montage. Juggle multiple patterns, while holding true to your point of view, and making rich scenic choices that awaken your sense of play and togetherness.

Pre-requisite: Must have completed the Reckless Intensive.

Register now!

Advanced 4Track
Instructor: Christian Capozzoli
Wednesdays November 2nd - December 14th, 7-10
(No class November 23rd)

Explore and perform Reckless Theatre's signature form. Be bold, rush the stage with confidence and connectivity, and match and ratchet your scenes to a frenzy.

This form demands group ownership, bold choices, physicality, split second agreement and attack. Get out of your brain and into your scenes.

All lessons are designed to create an immediate sense of trust, synergy, and agreement. Surprise and shock yourself. There will be 6 classes and 3 shows.

Shows are Wednesdays @ 10pm on November 30th, December 7th & 14th.

Pre-requisites: Reckless Intensive and Ensemble

Announcing Auditions for

A Reckless Christmas Carol

Sunday, October 30th 8:30-11pm

A Reckless Christmas Carol
December 16th, 17th & 18th @ 7:30pm

This production will be partially scripted and partially improvised - for each of the 3 performances, a different Scrooge will perform with the cast, having never read the script.

Auditions are open to anyone who has been a student within the last 3 months, anyone enrolled in an upcoming class, or anyone who has completed Masterclass.

To claim an audition spot, please sign up here. If you are completely unavailable during this time or if your available time slot has filled, please email anne@recklesstheatre.com and we will - with no guarantees - try to find another time to see you.

There will be rehearsals according to availability after Thanksgiving. Primarily these will focus on staging specific staging elements and magic, with many small scenes left to be played with in the moment.

For the audition, please prepare:

A brief piece as the character(s) you would like to audition for, utilizing any of Dickens' original text that you'd like. Be prepared to improvise in character. We are open to any character interpretations you want to show us, traditional or otherwise.

(Optional) 30 sec of any Christmas carol to sing

(Optional) Perform any instrument that you play.

Narrators: 2-3 people will be cast as Narrators who will guide the story with text while also serving as the safety valve if the piece deviates too far from the script. We would like to see pairs and trios audition together for these parts. Please bring character choices for who they are and how they are integrated in the story. For example, you could be a group of carolers or a parent & child reading Dickens' book together. You should be prepared to improvise in character together.

Suggested Characters:
Narrators (2-3)
Bob Cratchitt
Marley
Ghost of Christmas Past
Mr. & Mrs. Fezziwig (preferred audition together)
Young Ebeneezer
Belle
Ghost of Christmas Present
Mrs. Cratchitt
Tiny Tim
Nephew Fred
Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come
Old Joe/Mrs. Dilber
Goose Boy/Girl

An Open Letter from Reckless Theatre

We at Reckless strive to do exceptional work. We revel ensemble and are 100% serious about having a good time, while pushing the art form as far as possible. This aim demands a culture of yes.

We want to do work that moves both us and our audience: work that is honest and vulnerable, full of heat and weight, rich and textured, heightened and hilarious. This doesn’t just happen - it requires a change in approach. A change in how we teach in the classroom and how we enroll our students into our program.

Over the last four months we have been testing invitation-based enrollment. In that time, we feel that we have been able to curate a strong, fearless student body.

This method allows our teachers to teach to the entire room as opposed to adjusting for the novice/recreational learners, maximizing class time and allowing us to push and cover more material and techniques.

The last months have also prompted important discussions of safety across the New York City comedy scene. We recognize how much a sense of personal and artistic security has helped us cultivate the supportive and enthusiastic community we currently have. As we continue to bring more people in, we want to ensure that we are constantly developing a greater sense of togetherness and trust.

We have made a decision to make this our means of enrollment in the training program at Reckless.

Ways that you can be invited
A resident performer, coach or instructor can vouch for you by submitting your name to our registrar. They will be looking for candidates who are high character, passionate people with a genuine joy of improv and theatre.

You may work with these people directly by applying to Instant Teams, by enrolling in any of our elective courses (which includes an Intro course for novices), or by hiring a faculty member or Reckless certified coach to work with your practice group or indie team. You can share your work with us by participating in Some Universe*, Dancing with the Star Stuffs** or submitting a Fighter Pilot***.

As our schedule allows we will also be holding drop-in workshops at Reckless. These will only be $5 and are open to anyone - a great opportunity to test out the Reckless style of play and be seen by a Reckless coach or faculty member. We will be hosting our first drop-in on Saturday, October 8th 4-6pm led by house performer and faculty member Jack Gallagher.

Financially this is stupid. Most institutions make their money offering recreational/ground level improv classes to anyone with any interest with any skill set. Recreation and creation are similar but different - Reckless is different.

We hope to work with you soon.

*Some Universe is a variety show featuring diverse personal perspectives on an issue or idea. Each month we will announce the theme and accept submissions for storytelling, characters, performance art, sketches, happenings, dance pieces, and songs ranging from the heartfelt to the hilarious. You can send your submissions to someuniverse@recklesstheatre.com

**Dancing with the Star Stuffs will be looking for new comedy dance teams starting in Winter 2017. In the meantime, come check out their shows every other Saturday @ 10:30pm

***Fighter Pilots are accepted on a rolling basis at submissions@recklesstheatre.com - if selected your script for a 12-15 minute pilot or web-series (Adult Swim length) would be featured live on the Reckless stage and compete head-to-head with other pilots to see who returns for a second episode. Each month's show is judged by an industry representative and voted on by the audience. If a show wins 5 times, it will receive it's own run at Reckless.

Applications Now Open for Next Round of Instant Program!

Reckless Theatre's Instant Program is now accepting applications for all 3 of it's programs: Instant Teams, Instant Sketch, and our newest, Instant Character. The Instant Program gives comedians, writers and performers the reps they want and the notes they need to push themselves to the next level of their work. We feature players from all of the comedy theaters across the city and this is a great opportunity to expand your own community!

INSTANT TEAMS give improvisors the opportunity to get regular reps onstage while exploring a specific form in-depth. Teams are put together for an 8 week run of shows starting in September at Reckless. Every Tuesday, teams take the stage to perform a classic long-form. Performances are 7-8:30pm, September 27-November 22 (There is no show on Election Day, Nov. 8, go vote!)

Teams will also practice with a Reckless-trained coach each week, focusing on increasing confidence and connectivity as well as playing your form to the hilt.

Applicants must have completed at least 3 levels of improv study at any long-form school.

Get registered, Get placed, Get Part of IT!

APPLY HERE FOR INSTANT SKETCH!

Instant Sketch gives you the opportunity to write and perform live sketch comedy at Reckless Theatre!

From the very first meeting, you and your teammates will be pitching ideas. Each week, you will write a new sketch and workshop your teammates' sketches. We create a writers' room to foster everyone's development as you take risks putting your funniest ideas to paper. From there, we rehearse and bring your sketch to life for a live audience. If you want to experience the power and glory of making something from nothing, sign up today!

Groups will perform shows together on Tuesday, November 15th and Tuesday, November 22nd at 8:30pm.

INSTANT CHARACTER gives you the opportunity to develop and perform character pieces at Reckless Theatre! Eric Feurer (Character's Welcome @ UCB, Face/Off @ Reckless) will work with the team on developing lived-in, mapping, and conceptual characters and fully inhabiting them in their body and voice. By the end of the program you will have at least three polished, primed characters ready to take on the circuit.

Character shows take place on Tuesday, November 15th and Tuesday, November 22nd at 8:30pm. Additionally, your team will get a chance to compete as a part of Face/Off.

QUESTIONS??? Email instant@recklesstheatre.com for questions regarding any of the three programs!

Upcoming Auditions @ Reckless!

UPCOMING AUDITIONS @ RECKLESS

Students are eligible to audition if they are currently enrolled in a class (whether it has started or no) or were in a class within the last 2 months. Anyone who has completed the Masterclass is also invited to audition.

Not a current student but want to get involved? If you are a member of a duo or trio team with someone who is eligible, your entire team is eligible to audition for The Duo/Trio Battle. Otherwise, please look at our classes and sign-up for one today!

DANCING WITH STAR STUFFS (Season 2) / 30-MINUTE THRONES
DANCING WITH STAR STUFFS is getting ready for Season 2! We’ll be bringing you even more salsas, sequins, and spray-tans this round, so get your dance shoes ready. Join the drama, the glamour, the glitter, and the jazz hands for the craziest dance party on earth! Competitors will participate in once-monthly Saturday night shows with new dances each episode. Each performance will be judged on character game as well as presentation; the competitors with the lowest scores will dance head-to-head in an elimination battle and the audience decides who to save and to send packing.

30-MINUTE THRONES will be performed weekly before episodes 4-10 of HBO’s Game of Thrones. At 8:30pm each Sunday, Reckless Theatre will recap all the twists, turns, and tyranny of the previous episode of the fantasy hit! The audience to this show is then invited to stay after and join the Reckless family in watching that night’s episode. Each character will be cast and will be responsible for tracking their beats and events in each episode. Short rehearsals will be scheduled once the show is cast. Please audition in character for the specific role you are interested in. Looking similar to the HBO actor is a plus but not a necessity!

To audition for either or both projects, please sign-up for a one hour block during which you are entirely available. For DWSS you must audition as dance partners with three 1-min long sections of dances: one your choice and 2 with episode-specific themes. These will be emailed to you after signing-up. For 30-MINUTE THRONES, you will perform a brief character monologue and improvise in character. Please sign-up for a time slot via the link below.
Friday April 22, 6-8pm
Wednesday April 27, 7-9pm

BURN THIS SCRIPT / ONE NIGHT ONLY
Want to flex your acting muscles while you show your improv chops? Audition to perform the spine scene for an upcoming performance of BURN THIS SCRIPT or to be cast in a role in ONE NIGHT ONLY’s production of Midsummer Night’s Dream

In BURN THIS SCRIPT, actors and improvisors collide as beloved scripts are broken down, made topsy turvy, then incinerated and reborn like a phoenix rising. Act 1 - 2 actors present a fully memorized, rehearsed scene; Act 2 - the BTS ensemble improvises with, explores, and fucks with each of the characters; Act 3 - we return to the scene, now with anything up for grabs and the ensemble invading and re-imagining the piece. Will our actors hold their shit together as murderous goats and singing nuns invade their scene? Will playwrights stampede in fury as they watch their creations reimagined in ways otherwise unimaginable? Will audiences embark on an improvisational theatrical journey hitherto unknown? You better believe it. Actors know their script. We say let it burn.

For ONE NIGHT ONLY a brave crew will embark on a treacherous journey: performing a fully memorized play they have never rehearsed. Will the rough waters of unexpected choices, accidental entrances, impulsive love scenes and unforeseen moments threaten to capsize this vessel? Or will our Reckless adventurers keep the ship afloat? One Night Only combines the ephemeral, immediate nature of improv with the narrative power of scripted plays to create a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

BURN THIS SCRIPT performance TBD
If you are cast, you will enter the actor pool and will have your performance scheduled later. No rehearsals, no dues.

ONE NIGHT ONLY: Midsummer Night’s Dream is Friday, June 17 @8pm
The cast will participate in 3 workshops in preparation for the performance. You may not miss more than 1 or your role will be re-cast.
Ensemble & Theatricality - Wednesday June 1, 7-10pm
Living Shakespeare’s Text - Monday June 6, 7-10pm
Intimacy on Stage - Saturday June 11, 12-3pm
$30-45 (dependent on final cast size)

To audition for either or both projects, please sign up for a one-hour block during which you are entirely available. For BURN THIS SCRIPT you must audition as scene partners, not solo performers. Please prepare a rich 2 minute scene and be prepared to improvise with the material. When you choose an audition time, please note the names of both actors. For ONE NIGHT ONLY, please prepare a 60-90 sec Shakespearean monologue. Please sign up for a time slot via the link below.
Friday April 22, 6-8pm
Saturday April 23, 12-2pm

THE DUO/TRIO BATTLE SHOW (still to be officially named)
This show will pit duo against duo in an epic battle royale! Watch as the Reckless mainstage becomes a blood bath on Friday nights! One team will host, 2 teams will go head-to-head, competing for the audience’s love and laughter and striving to emerge victorious. The winning team will come back the following week to take on a new adversary - and the cycle of destruction continues…

To be eligible to audition, at least one member of your team must have been a student at Reckless/with Christian Capozzoli within the last 6 months.

The audition slots have filled. To be considered, please submit a video (max 15-minutes) to submissions@recklesstheatre.com - labelling the email “Duo/Trio Battle” - by May 31st at midnight.

And coming soon…
BIG FIASCO Auditions
